South Sudan celebrates independence

South Sudan became the world's newest nation at midnight
Juba, July 9 (IANS) Tens of thousands of South Sudanese Saturday watched the raising of their country's flag at an independence ceremony in the capital Juba, BBC reported. Glorious celebration of the long-awaited independence began in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, at midnight last night. Frenzied people poured into the city, dancing, banging drums, waving flags and chanting the name of Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the new nation.

South Sudan became the 193rd country recognized by the UN and the 54th UN member state in Africa.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and UN chief Ban Ki-moon were among dignitaries who came for the event.

Afridi can't be made captain again: Butt

Karachi, July 8 (IANS) Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was left “weighing his options” after Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ijaz Butt fired a salvo at the allrounder, saying that he has no captaincy future.The PCB chairman, reigniting a dispute that rocked Pakistan cricket last month, accused Afridi of playing a negative role during the national team's One-day series against West Indies earlier this summer.

WORST TRAIN ACCIDENT OF THIS YEAR - INDIA

35 killed, 200 injured as Delhi-bound train derails
FATEHPUR (UP)7/10/2011:  At least 35 people were killed and over 200 injured when 15 bogies of a speeding Delhi-bound Kalka Mail derailed here today in the worst train accident this year.  
The derailment took place at 12.20 PM when the packed train from Howrah reached near Malwa station,nearly 120kms from Lucknow.
"15 bogies of the train derailed out of which 10 are in bad shape. The exact cause of the derailment is being ascertained. The commissioner of railway safety has been directed to probe theincident,"Generalmanager, North Central Railway, H C Joshi said.


Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati announced a compensation of Rs one lakh each to the kin of those who died, Rs 50,000 to seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those suffering minor injuries.
